Thur 5th April

Now in our 53rd hotel of the trip!
Been training every morning, it's hard work in the heat. A rest day is needed tomorrow.
Not many buses left in Mexico which is music to our ears as every bus includes 2-3 Walt disney kids films at full volume and -10 air conditioning for the duration of the journey.

Wed 4th April

Surprise it's 40 degrees! Another bus journey ticked and we are nearing the end of our Mexican adventure.

Merida has a lot going on so fingers crossed we can have a good 4-5 days here before our next move.

With nine more nights left in Mexico the last 5 months are starting to come back in little snapshots. It's strange to reflect on India which seems like another life! 

Getting a second wind for the backpacking at the moment, could be because home is within our sights! We have been thinking of Edinburgh a lot recently.

Arrived at the peak of the afternoon sun and quickly wilted with the 20kg rucksacks on! 40 degrees and no breeze!

Not much here in Campeche so 2 nights and we will be moving on! Nice promenade on the Gulf of Mexico but not much to do here.

Fri 30th March

Spent the day visiting markets, drinking coffee and enjoying some cool weather.

 

Thur 29th March

Touchdown Chiapas. An unassuming 5hr bus journey turned into a 15 hr overnight bus odyssey! Good to squeeze two days travel into one anyway. Just need to recover the loss of sleep and we can explore San Cristobal which looks great.

Wed 28th March

Getting ready to catch our bus out of Escondido. The sleepy pace had us trapped there and it was nice to get into a bit of a routine. 7am beach runs and surfing, roasting hot beach walks for breakfast at Playa Principal and lazy days hiding from the fireball sun.

We are breaking the long journey to Chiapas in two by stopping for a night in Juchitan.

Thur 22nd March

Decided to stay another 6 nights. "Puerto Escondido- You'll never leave". Totally charmed by the place. Slowly acclimatising to the heat of the day. This place is the perfect antidote to travel fatigue! A real find.
Mexico could be our fave destination to date!
( the Margaritas at Hotel Ines are almost as good as Pauls )


Wed 21st March

 

Extended our Puerto Escondido stay by a few days. Getting into the pace of life here, it's hard to move on. A relaxing day sheltering from the sun and watching the waves as usual, a few sunset Margarita's at a local beach and some planning for the next 3 weeks in Mexico.

The trip is changing phase with thoughts of a return to reality infiltrating beach life!

Mon 19th March

Surf's getting wild today so we went for an early beach walk to watch the action. I promise no more surf pics! Starting to dream about cold fresh air! The Chiapas climate will be welcome before the end of the week.

Sat 17th March

We were both out in the surf at 7am this morning. Great way to start a day. Finished by 11am before the sun got too hot. Exhausting work paddling through impact zones. The Zicatela ( the easy end ) is an unlikely place for Angela's first day on a board but it was perfect.

Thur 15th March

A perfect day. A 7am beach run followed by a morning watching the surfers.
We are up at 6.30 tomorrow for a double surf lesson at La Punta. It's so hot we can almost only venture outside first thing and last thing!

Tues 13th March

A 5 hr bus to the coast became 12 hrs somehow! We are staying right opposite the famous Mexican pipeline. The season here is just about to shift from dry to wet and the big surf is coming. We visited "the point" today to see some surfing as the pipeline isn't quite running yet. The locals were showing some serious skills.
It's so so hot here, it's like an oven. We havent had heat like this since India.

The beach is huge and v quiet. We found a nice place overlooking the crashing waves.

Sunday 11th March

A sleepy super hot Sunday in Oaxaca. Booked our exit for Tuesday to Puerto Escondido on the South Coast. Looking forward to seeing the Mexican pipeline, one of the worlds most extreme and reliable surf spots!  

Wed 7th March

Arrived in Oaxaca after a scenic 6 hr bus south through the high sierras. Great to escape the polluted air of Mex city. Much hotter here without the smog.

Tues 6th March

Teotihuacan pyramides today! Got there late afternoon when it was hot but quiet.
The Avenue of The Dead links the pyramids of the sun and moon. It's an epic site.

Hopefully bound for Oaxaca tomorrow. The pollution in Mexico City is starting to take its toll.

Fri 2nd Mar

Took the metro and then the light railway to the South of Districto Federal today and spent some time floating on the canals of Xochimilco. Another hot blue sky day. We were accosted by floating river shops and forced to buy cold bottles of Corona beer!

Anthropology Museum today. Thousands of years of Central American history in one afternoon.

A surprise find at the Anthropology museum. The Xochipilli statue! made my day.

28th Feb 2012

After another mammoth sleep we are finally out of hibernation and feeling human. Mexico city is amazing. 

We took our first foray into the Zocalo tonight, well...last night!

Badly jet lagged and spaced out at 7000ft above sea level we were delighted to sample street Tacos and start ticking off Jo and Paul's list of city hot spots. We checked out Bar Opera for a Marguerita and Cafe Popular which could become a firm favourite over the next week, the coffee is served chino style, which was a revelation. 

Its 6am Mexico time, I can't sleep a wink so i'm reading about the city online and dreaming of more Popular coffee!


We are staying at the Emporio hotel on the Reforma but we have booked Hotel Isabel in the Zocalo for the next 5 nights. There's enough to see in Mexico city to stay a month ;  )

27th Feb 2012

It's been a long journey from Sydney, a 12 hour flight, 12 hours in Manhatten Beach area LA and a midnight 3 hr flight to Mexico. We we're falling asleep standing up towards the end.


Almost 2 days without sleep! Checked in and passed out for 8 hrs. It will take a few days to fix our body clocks. Looking forward to seeing the city!
