Hard to believe the end of the trip has arrived but here it is.

Tomorrow we return to reality and start remembering the last six months!

It's been a real adventure.

Tuesday 1st May 4.20pm

Went running in Golden Gate park this morning, the cross country sections were v interesting with hippies emerging randomly from the bushes or sleeping in the middle of the trail!

San Fran is quite a place, we have never seen anything like it, an awful lot of sad stories here, we have seen a lot of poor souls pacing in circles and shouting at things unseen.

The sixties are still alive here but there can't be many hippies staying in the Haight at $3000 a month for a 2 bed apartment.

There are a lot of homeless street kids who gravitated here after reading Tom Wolfes "Electric Cool Aid Acid Test". That was 40 years ago but San Francisco still carries the psychedlic flame with regular Goldengate Park parties and even Timothy Leary remembrance parties.

The Haight Ashbury has become very gentrified but still has something special, a great place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Sunday 29th April

Spend yesterday in Berkeley. Great to see the famous University Campus which dominates the whole town. The surrounding hills and parks are amazing, the place has a great energy about it.

Today we took our final journey of the whole trip to San Francisco! What a feeling to roll over the Bay Bridge and drop the hire car off. That's it, our last destination, "the end", no more buses or trains and two flights left to get home.

Coming over the bridge it really started to sink in, our routine of the last 6 months is about to change massively.

Spent the afternoon exploring the Haight Ashbury and relaxing in Golden Gate Park under a blue sky!

Santa Cruz & Berkeley_California

Today we drove an hour North to Berkeley, got checked into a motel near the famous university and went trail running up high in the Tilden National Park, it was hot. The views of the San Fran bay area were incredible. We didn't have the camera but here is a pic of the view I found on-line.

Weather is looking great for our last 4 days, onto San Fran tomorrow where we drop off the hire car.

The end is nigh!

Someone else's pic of the view from Tilden Hill of Bay Area

Rolled into SC yesterday afternoon with great anticipation! We had an afternoon on the boardwalk and an evening downtown. Sad to say we were disappointed. The place had a run down feel about it and didn't feel like a very good place to spend time.

Monterey_California

What's not to like about Monterey!

A beautiful coastline with elephant seals sunbathing along it's craggy perimeter and an 18 mile running track that winds all the way to the famous Pebble Beach Golf course.

We had a great run this morning and will spend a few more hours here before heading up to Santa Cruz this afternoon.

Big Sur

Took Highway 1 onto Big Sur today and enjoyed some incredible coastline.

Winding roads with idyllic vistas interspersed with perfect beaches and seaside towns!

On the drive I saw some of the best looking mountain bike trails I've ever seen, it was torture! Winding, hardpacked, switchbacked, fast flowing dirt trails overlooking the massive Pacific Ocean. Max tells me there are literally hundreds of miles of quality horse trails all over California, enough for two life times of riding!

The Pacific horizon is so vast here we could clearly see the earths curvature.

We saw a huge colony of Elephant Seals near Hearst Castle and stopped for a brief wine tasting at the Laetitia Vineyard.

We stopped in Monterey for the night after 7 hrs driving.

The end of the trip is looming large with 6 days left and only 100 miles until San Francisco!

Santa Monica to Santa Barbara

Spent the night in Santa Monica, it was great to park the car and walk into town where we could enjoy a few local beers.

Drove to Santa Barbara the next day up the PCH, a beautiful drive.

The weather in Yosemite is looking awful so we will get there next time we visit California!

With one week left in the trip we are going to head up Big Sur on the coast onto San Francisco.

Maybe San Luis Obispo today!

Hollywood, Mulholland Drive, Orange County_Los Angeles

It's been an amazing couple of days. We explored Hollywood and Mulholland drive before driving down to Orange County to stay with a friend.

We have been treated to a guided tour of the OC including Laguna, Newport, Corona Del Mar and Crystal Cove.

Thanks to Max, Iris and Felipe and of course Gypsy the wonder dog for the hospitality and good times!

Venice Beach_Rodeo Drive_Santa Monica_Los Angeles

Had a fun packed day with Venice beach to start. Saw Pomeranians playing pianos amongst other craziness! Heard so much about Venice beach over the years it was great to finally witness the spectacle.

Great area for running and working out with Muscle beach, a gymnastic sandpit and a skatepark.

Rodeo Drive in the afternoon followed by Sunset Boulevard.

Arrived back at the motel after dark exhausted. Driving in LA is hard work but a car is essential.
